Life A GREEN TEAM Adam and Joe have owned and run GreenThumb

Croydon and Bromley for over 15 years, employing local people and bringing lawns to life!

L

ifelong friends Adam Hillier and Joe Weller (pictured below) were only in their mid-twenties when they became franchisees, which at the time was unusually young within GreenThumb, but it was clearly no barrier to

success. From having just three customers when they started the business in March 2005, they now have over 5,000 and eight vans on the road. Adam and Joe tell us about what they each

bring to the running of the business and how things have evolved since the early days…

Joe: No two days are the same, but we deliver treatments all year round, with different considerations, dependent upon the treatment cycle. We apply different products at different times, so it is important to check stocks and reorder where we might be running low, especially in the case of fertilizer which is the lifeblood of our business.

For when we are aerating and scarifying lawns, I make sure the machines are serviced and don’t let us or, more importantly, our customers, down. I predominantly manage the crew and

concentrate on service delivery. This involves training, particularly in the case of new staff and assisting them as they go about their business.

“Adam and I felt it important for us to have our own areas of the business, something that we realised long ago as the business grew so rapidly”

Very occasionally I will need to treat lawns, usually in emergencies, but this has reduced massively over the years. In the early days we would drive the van and carry out the treatments ourselves. To be honest – I miss those days! But the business naturally grew to the point where we needed to recruit more people. I still enjoy visiting customers though and

get involved in some quotes and service calls, but we have a very capable workforce, who not only treat lawns, but also sign up customers. It’s a tight team and most of them have been with us for a number of years. Marketing is also part of my responsibility,

which might, for example, involve liaising with several local magazines, which have served us well. Adam and I felt it important for us to

have our own areas of the business, something that we realised long ago as the business grew so rapidly.
