Advice
Liz Bywater, president of Bywater Consulting, gives her top tips for avoiding burnout:
• Focus on the right things. Can a task be delegated? Is it worth the effort? Will it move the business forward?
• When you are on holiday, be on holiday – even a forced “break” away from the office counts. Set some boundaries between your work life and personal life
• Meet with other franchisors and leaders. They might have some useful perspectives
• Find something you love, and do it regularly
the permission to set boundaries and work to preserve them.
Embrace mindfulness The concept of mindfulness
comes from Eastern spiritual and religious traditions. It is a key part of Buddhism and also appears in Hindu writings.
A great deal of scientific research
shows that the mindful approach to stress, anxiety and mental health is a very helpful and popular way of dealing with and diffusing high levels of stress.
Mindfulness refers to being completely in touch with and aware of the present moment, as well as
taking a non-evaluative and non- judgmental approach to your inner experience. It is essentially about noticing what is around you. So often, if you are not careful, you can find yourself racing through life and not taking the time to stop and relish the experience! What is the point of that kind of existence?
In the US, 96 per cent of senior leaders felt “somewhat” burned out, and a third described
their experience as “extreme” (Source: Harvard Medical School)
