FRANCHISEFOCUS INVESTMENT: £44,900* The time is right

After accessing his pension, Stuart Hallam found the business ownership he was looking for in Expense Reduction Analysts

S

tuart Hallam launched his Expense Reduction Analysts (ERA) franchise in February 2018. He had long

harboured ambitions to start his own business and to be his own boss, but with a young family and financial commitments, the time had just never been quite right. Stuart says he experienced his very own ‘Eureka!’ moment when he turned 55 and realised he could access his pension. True to nature, he took decisive action and embarked on the journey that would lead him to ERA. Stuart says: “I felt unfulfilled. I didn’t like

the commuting, I wasn’t really enjoying what I was doing – things felt like they were going in the wrong direction for me. When I turned 55 and realised that I could access my pension, suddenly, a world of opportunity opened up. What had previously been a dream of business ownership felt doable. “In the past, supporting my wife and

daughter took priority, so taking a financial risk with no backup just wasn’t an option. Then, with the funds behind me and my daughter now 22, I decided it was time. I resigned from my job and forced the issue on myself! My skills and experiences are what ultimately led me to joining ERA.”

Finding and joining a world leading brand Stuart and his wife attended The National Franchise Exhibition in Birmingham. “We compared the stands and the people at the show, and it became apparent that our gut instinct about ERA was right. I’d already spoken to [head of partner recruitment] Matt O’Neil but we hadn’t met, so I used it as an opportunity to get a feel of the brand from a distance without them knowing who I was. I liked what I heard and what I saw. My wife and I spoke to an existing franchise partner and were able to ask lots of questions. It struck me that everyone at ERA was very open and transparent. They felt like the kind of people you’d want to be in business with.

80 p Stuart Hallam “What attracted me to ERA more than

anything else was the material that I had picked up and read, the people I had seen and also the conversations I had with Matt. Throughout it all, I never felt pressurised. It just felt right. The fact that you’re one of many, part of a collaborative network and never just a one-man band – you’re very much part of a team. It all fit for me. “After the exhibition, I went to a Discovery

Day at head office and made my mind up there and then. I really enjoyed the day and they offered me the opportunity to attend the Christmas conference. I signed up in December and met people who offered help immediately. I couldn’t wait to get started! “Training was great – all the marketing

material was fantastic and different specialists led each module. It was helpful to go through it together with other new franchise partners and share

knowledge and experience from day one. “I have weekly calls and regular meetings with the support team – everyone is very accessible. On top of that, we have regional meetings and academy meetings, which are for everyone who has been in the business under two years.” ERA is a world leader in cost management and procurement consultancy. Franchise partners are trained to offer strategic advice and practical methods, which optimise supplier relationships and generate cash. l
