From a legal perspective it is important to note that the DeBreather has more than one use. If an external supply of oxygen is added, the R2D can be used to protect the user from toxic chemicals and smoke. For example, first-responders could use the DeBreather when attending to dangerous industrial fires and so on. The De- Breather comes with warning labels that state ‘any use without an additional supply of oxygen could result in loss of life’.
One of the main objections to the plastic Exit Bag is the ‘Yuk’ fac- tor. It is common for people to say, ‘I don’t like the idea of a plas- tic bag over my head, and I don’t want to be found like that!’ Even though this adverse reaction is purely one of aesthetic (rather that the very effective physiology of the method), the aesthetics are often enough to make the person turn to other methods. Indeed, the Sarco project has been driven, in part, by a desire to make the hypoxic death more ‘appealing’.
