New Home for the Straw Museum in Signa
The Straw and Weaving Museum in Signa, Italy, has moved to new premises following the realisation of the local municipality’s redevelopment project. First opened in 1997, the Straw Museum, known as the Museo della Paglia e dell’Intreccio Domenico Michelacci, preserves and documents the Florentine district’s rich heritage of straw processing, which dates back to the Renaissance. The move to the new site in a former
Carabinieri barracks, inaugurated June 10, 2023, has finally allowed the museum to relocate its entire collection of objects along with its many documentary, bibliographic, archival and photographic materials. Among the items housed are different types of straw and grain, braids, ornaments, clothing, footwear, woven objects in natural and man-made fibres (with special reference to basketry from all parts of the world), embroidery, textiles, tools, machinery, and a selection of hats dating from the late 19th century up to the 1970s. Constructed on three levels and divided into several rooms, some for permanent displays, others for
thematic/temporary exhibitions, the museum’s new complex is designed to give a contemporary feel to the exhibition spaces while showing the history behind the artisanal tradition that produced the famous Florentine straw hat. The museum is dedicated to the memory of Domenico Michelacci, the pioneer who in early 18th- century Signa introduced a method of cultivating wheat exclusively for weaving, which drove the revolution in straw hat production in Tuscany.

The Haute Dogs Calendar is back with a new charity campaign, which this year is in support of Harbin SHS Animal Rescue. The aim is to raise over £10,000 through the calendar sales, which all goes towards Harbin SHS’s mission of transforming the lives of China’s most neglected and abused dogs through rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming. For the 2024 Haute Dogs Calendar,
London-based milliner and project founder Awon Golding has brought together twelve international milliners to design twelve couture hats worn by twelve dogs rescued by Harbin SHS. The featured milliners are Ellen Wang Thommessen, Reny Morsch, Lauren J Ritchie, Liz Crossman, Emily Brewell for Lock & Co, Gráinne Maher, Rachel Trevor-Morgan, Awon Golding, Anél Heyman, Jessica Broas, Bobbi Heath of Chic Chapeau, and Belinda Osborne of Peacock Millinery. The hope is that the calendar will bring a bit of joy into people’s lives while showcasing the power of rescue as well as raising crucial funds. Since its launch six years ago, the Haute Dogs campaign has raised over £70,000 for dog rescue charities around the world.
