Editor’s letter #99 | November 2023

At the moment, an interesting exhibition is running at the Museum of London Docklands: ‘Fashion City: How Jewish Londoners shaped global style’. It tells the stories of London’s often forgotten Jewish fashion makers who helped London become the fashion city it is today. One of the fashion makers included in the exhibition is milliner Otto Lucas, about whose life and career more information can be found on page 44 in this issue. Further on, you will also find an interview with milliner Awon Golding, and reading the article you can’t help but find similarities in her and Otto Lucas’s stories. Two talented designers who moved from abroad to the UK to develop themselves in the millinery trade in London, where both set up their own couture millinery label. Both managed to become very successful – with their own brand as well as designing for other labels – while also doing their bit to help others around them, whether for humans or animals. For everybody who is not sure yet at which level of professionalism they want to run their business, make sure not to miss Judith Mishler’s article Hobby or full-time career? in this and the next issue. For this article Judith spoke to several milliners and owners of hat-related businesses who decided to make the transition into a full-time career in the hat industry. Their feedback might be useful to help you decide whether you should take the step yourself.
