The annual Hattember millinery competition, which raises funds for the John Skipper Kelly Fund in Australia, invites entrants to create a piece of headwear on a given theme using a curated bundle of materials. This year’s competition featured two categories, ‘Millinery’ and ‘Novice Millinery’. The theme for the Millinery category was ‘Beyond the Bloom’, challenging participants to push the boundaries with florals. For Novice Millinery, the theme was ‘Happy Hatting!’, as prompted by the statement written on orders at Hatters Millinery Supplies, who provided the curated kits of materials. As such, Novice

entrants were asked to create a piece that brings joy or happiness. Participants were supplied with millinery
materials of the same type and quantity but in different colours for each category. The competition organisers were thrilled to receive spectacular and diverse creations from all over Australia as well as from New Zealand, Romania, Sweden, the US and the UK. The judging team included head milliner at Opera Australia Rebecca Read, renowned milliner Rick McGill, and Hattember founder Catherine Kelly. The winners were announced in
September at a ‘Petit Gala’ evening at the Embellish Atelier hat store in Rozelle and the winning pieces displayed in the shopfront window. The People’s Choice, decided by a public vote online, and the other award winners were published a month later.
