The many benefits of potassium salt

The health risks associated with common salt are becoming increasingly unavoidable, and consumers are searching for healthier alternatives without compromising on taste. Chief operating officer of NuTek Natural Ingredients Barry Knudson explains the company’s natural salt solutions – offering the same taste and properties as sodium salt, without the health implications.

NuTek Food Science recently changed its name to NuTek Natural Ingredients. Why the change? Barry Knudson: From the very beginning, our company’s focus was on health and wellness through natural ingredients. As NuTek expanded its portfolio, we decided that our company name should reflect our products and mission of creating natural, clean label ingredients. NuTek Natural Ingredients is a name that supports our core values of simplicity, transparency, and sustainability to create solutions that support the nutritional demands of our growing global community.

What is your reaction to the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) new guidance on using potassium salt as a common name for potassium chloride? Consumer research has shown that the majority of consumers prefer the name potassium salt versus potassium chloride. This change helps consumers understand that it is a natural salt ingredient, not a chemical. In 2016, NuTek proposed the common name of potassium salt through a citizens’ petition to the FDA, and it was supported by advocacy groups, trade associations and academic institutions.

the same functions as common salt but does not have the harmful effects of sodium that, when overconsumed, can lead to heart disease. In fact, the average American overconsumes sodium by 50% and underconsumes potassium by 56% of the daily reference value. The healthy balance of both salts helps regulate blood pressure and fight against heart disease.

Himalayan salt seems to be a trend these days. Does NuTek Natural Ingredients have a lower sodium solution to Himalayan salt? Yes. Through our natural, innovative washing and drying process we have added our potassium salt to bring the sodium and potassium levels into balance. Potassium salt is combined with Himalayan salt, providing a healthier alternative to regular Himalayan salt for a world that consumes too much sodium.

Why hasn’t potassium salt been used more by the food industry in the past? Historically, potassium chloride has been associated with having a metallic taste. NuTek Natural Ingredients developed Salt for Life, which uses an innovative washing and drying process resulting in a solution

“The average American overconsumes sodium by 50%, and underconsumes potassium by 56%, of the daily reference value.”

The FDA recognised the health benefits that potassium could provide, and consumer studies showed that there was confusion about the word ‘chloride’ but not ‘salt.’ Potassium salt serves all of

with the same taste and functionality as sodium. Now food manufacturers don’t need expensive herbs or seasonings to mask the metallic flavour of potassium as there are better solutions available.

With more awareness around healthy, clean label choices, consumers are reading labels and food manufacturers are providing more foods that include potassium salt. In a recent consumer survey, 82% of respondents prefer potassium salt over sodium in their food. By removing some of the common salt and replacing it with Salt for Life, the functionality and great flavour remains, and there is a healthy balance of salts.

What steps are being taken towards sodium reduction around the world?

There is progress being made, not only in product reformulation, but also through public awareness and ongoing educational campaigns, labelling requirements, and voluntary and mandatory sodium reduction targets. Many countries are recognising that sodium reduction is necessary for their citizens’ health, and we are confident NuTek will become a leader in the fight against heart disease caused by the overconsumption of sodium.

How has Covid-19 impacted the potassium salt market? Besides the issues with being a global supplier in a pandemic, it has actually been good that people are making healthier choices with what they eat and purchase by looking at the nutrition facts on labels. With recent data showing that people with heart disease are at greater risk of severe complications from Covid, avoiding the overconsumption of sodium and opting for healthier alternatives is becoming a global priority. ●
