s I imagine is the case for most of our readers, the pandemic has overshadowed much of the past 18 months. It feels like every time there is light in one country, another goes into a catastrophic failure. The most recent sufferers in India are in the grips of an awful crisis, while in the UK we are at nearly 70% receipt of at least one dose of a vaccine. The sheer complexity of what might first appear to be a simple case of make, ship and distribute – the vaccine is causing headaches worldwide, even in countries that have highly developed logistics and supply chains in place. The layers of municipal government that have previously led to the chaotic recycling rates mean disparities rear their heads; what works in one county, town or municipality does not hold true for their neighbours. Why does this matter? From the lack of sunlight to being indoors for longer periods, from inactivity to the relentless anxiety or stress, health and well- being have never been so front of mind. Ingredients have an incredible capacity to support real, meaningful change in our well-being and health; from CBD and hemp and the reduction of nausea or improvement in muscle recovery, through to the impact of sugar replacement on our cardiovascular health – choosing the right ingredient can make a world of difference. It has to be an informed, supported and educated choice, however. As medical science and research continues to explore the impact of ingredients on our long-term health, claims made by companies in the industry crystallise into actionable platforms – the sky is the limit for successful companies. People want to know how the product will help them with their goals. It is why labels, nutrients and health content is so widely consumed these days – we used to skip over the label when we bought something, but now we can scan the barcode, track the nutrients on an app and build a specific picture of what ingredients we are consuming into our bodies, using that information to adjust or target our own individual needs.

These twin themes of honesty (being very clear what the product is where it came from and how it helps) and resilience (the supply and logistics needed to ensure these products get where they need to go, in spite of all the challenges being faced by the global pandemic) will be repeated at conferences – digital and as we return to live. I hope to see you in whichever format we can, and to see how resilience and trust benefits you in 2021.
