Company insight Next-generation starch

Sweden-based SSF produces and refines speciality starches, and boasts a global presence in more than 50 countries. Ingredients Insight talks to research and development manager Kalle Johansson about the steps the company is taking to make the refining process more sustainable, and about their high-performing low-energy Lyckeby Careful Clean Label starch range.

What is the history of SSF? Kalle Johansson: We’re a Swedish company owned by 600 potato farmers in the south-east of Sweden. Using the brand name Lyckeby, we produce and refine native and speciality starches, mainly from potatoes.

The company was founded in 1927 in reaction to the low market price of starch and poor efficiency at many of the small starch factories in the south of Sweden. The cooperative of potato farmers went on to invest in bigger factories with higher energy efficiency and less water consumption. Over time, our work has improved production and minimised the use of energy, water and chemicals.

What factors are driving your latest research and development work? Most of our development work is focused on bringing innovative functional products to the market that have been produced in a safe and sustainable way. To reach our goals we use new process technologies, minimal chemicals and biotechnology. Another important part of our research and development is finding ways to utilise

“The product range consists of cook-up and cold swelling starches, and has a wide range of applications including ready meals, bakery fillings, processed meat, coating and batters, dairy products and plant-based solutions.”

How does SSF contribute to more sustainable food production? Refining starch is an energy demanding process. As a result, energy efficiency is the most important sustainability challenge we face. At the moment, we have several ongoing projects in this area. For example, we are building a new factory for refining cold water swelling starch using modern energy recycling technology. As well as examining the processing steps, we take responsibility for sustainability throughout the whole value chain, from the farming of raw materials to application in final consumer products. It is crucial to understand that this is not a competition between us and our

examining their business to solve specific issues. We do not compare ourselves to other starch producers; instead, we analyse, take responsibility for our business and welcome others to do the same.

Can you tell us about your Lyckeby Careful products and their range of applications? Lyckeby Careful represents a range of high-performing clean label starches that meet the industry’s need for functional ingredients, as well as the consumer demand for tasty clean label products. Our Careful technology makes it possible to produce thickening starches with a lower carbon footprint than traditional starch-refining technology. The product range consists of cook-up and cold swelling starches, and has a wide range of applications including ready meals, bakery fillings, processed meat, coating and batters, dairy products and plant-based solutions. Besides the functionality that provides high viscosity, all the products have a white colour profile and neutral taste. What’s more, our clean label solution for coating and batter applications is unique in the market. Our Lyckeby Careful CB 100 and Lyckeby Careful CB 400 products provide crispness and texture in different types of demanding coating and batter systems. ●
