A Colorful Keepsake Above the desk, a colorful tapestry catches the
eyes of passersby. Aſter earning a bachelor’s degree in biology from Bucknell University and a doctorate in neurobiology from UNC-Chapel Hill, Koplas decided to enroll in Duke’s Master of Science in Physical Therapy program. The tapestry was a giſt from the classmates in her cohort and serves as symbolic reminder of a cherished time in her life.
Portraits of Influence Two photos pay homage to a very
special influence in Koplas’ professional career and personal connection to Queens. Professor Emerita Virginia Martin,
Ph.D., joined the
biology faculty at Queens in 1966 and served the University through her retirement in 2005. With a scholarship in her memory, Martin’s legacy still lives on at Queens today through the many faculty, students, and alumni whom she greatly impacted. “When I started teaching at Queens, Virginia became my mentor. She taught me to keep nature close and to trust that I could walk the line of challenging students in a compassionate way.
