“Charlote is such a giving city — there are so many nonprofits here, and the people in the Queen City go above and beyond to help each other out,” said Darryl White Sr. ’92, MSTOD ’21, assistant dean, diversity, inclusion, and community engagement. “Since many of our students aren’t from Charlote, we try to introduce them to these community resources that need our help, and they usually end up volunteering at several of them when they are not in class or on campus.”

For Maggie Dineen ’25, the call to serve was integral in making a decision to enroll at Queens. “When I was recruited to play rugby from my high school in Milwaukee, I asked the coach if there would be opportunities to volunteer because it was important to me,” she shared. “Three years later, some of my most cherished memories are tied to volunteering with teammates at an aſter-school program for underserved children. We call it ‘sweeping the shed,’ making a space beter than when we found it.”

White adds, “The Royal Days of Service aren’t just about a single week; they inspire a ripple effect of service throughout the year. Even the smallest acts of kindness make a world of difference. I used to think that in order to help people, you needed to give them money. But I discovered that I could be generous with my time, my compassion, and my desire to help other people, which meant more than a dollar amount.”

The spirit of service wasn’t confined to the Queens campus. In fact, alumni in Raleigh, Greensboro, Atlanta, and Nashville volunteered in their respective cities in an effort to support their alma mater and carry on King’s legacy.

The success of this year’s Royal Days of Service inspired a renewed sense of purpose across the Queens community. The outpouring of generosity and the tireless dedication of volunteers impacted families across Charlote in their time of need. In the future, Queens envisions growing partnerships with local organizations and expanding its reach to create positive changes.

The Royal Days of Service are a testament to Queens’ spirit, a promise to build a future where service is not a fleeting flame, but an enduring torch, illuminating the path to a brighter tomorrow.
