From the President Dear Alumni and Friends,

I oſten find myself reflecting on the invigorating energy of our remarkable city. Charlote is a city on the rise, brimming with ambition and constantly reshaping its skyline. It’s no surprise, then, that the landscape of higher education is also undergoing an exciting transformation.

In this edition of Queens Magazine, we focus on how we are leaning into Charlote’s boundless innovation and how we’re not just witnessing this change, we’re training leaders like Dr. Dionisios Vrochides and embracing change — evolving alongside our city to become one of the nation’s leading universities.

You’ll also read about some exciting things happening on our campus. We’ve welcomed new members of our leadership team who bring years of experience and a strong strategic vision for our growing Queens community.

You’ll read about how we’re continuing our tradition of bringing world-renowned leaders and thinkers to our campus for sold-out Arts at Queens and Learning Society events to elevate Queens as a convener of intellectual excellence, providing a forum where thought-provoking discussions thrive.

You’ll also learn about how our commitment and impact on our community extend deep into and beyond the city of Charlote. This semester, our students, faculty, staff, and alumni honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by participating in a series of events tied to our Royal Days of Service.

As we make our way through our 167th year in Charlote, we are blessed and upliſted by the unwavering support of our alumni and friends. In February, we celebrated 10 years of giving with QUnited, joining together to make a collective impact on the Queens community. Your continued support has been the cornerstone of our journey and is essential in helping us to provide transformative learning experiences for students around the globe.

We are an active and permanent part of Charlote’s vibrant history, and I am confident that we’ll have an important place in its bright future as well.

Sincerely,

Dan Lugo President, Queens University of Charlote

Queens Professor

Uses Creativity on Campus to Inspire

Mike Wirth, MFA, associate professor in the art, design, and music department, recently completed one of the largest art installments on the Queens campus. The towering mural, spanning 3,800 square feet, is located at the entrance to the North Parking Deck. The mural took 11 days to complete and required about 75 hours of painting.

“The mural is an artistic representation of our

elevation to DI athletics and the exciting transformations that are happening across the Queens campus,” said Wirth. “I had two goals with this project. First, I wanted to use my creativity to inspire Royals Pride by painting a larger-than-life Rex head and foster unity among our faculty and staff. Next, I wanted my artwork to welcome visiting athletes and remind them that although we are new, we

The mural enhances the beauty of the campus and encourages students, faculty, and staff to engage with each other while fostering a sense of community and belonging.

“Our Royals mural is a powerful welcome to fans who, upon arrival, are immediately immersed in the Queens brand and all that it represents,” said Cherie Swarthout, director of athletics. “There has been so much excitement around our transition to Division I, and Mike Wirth’s vibrant mural epitomizes the electric feeling pulsating through the athletics department at this time.”
