n many ways, Queens’ growth mirrors that of the city it calls home. The university and Charlote are inextricably linked.
Adrienne Amador Oddi, Queens’ vice president for strategic enrollment and communications, shared a history lesson that illustrates the long, mutually beneficial relationship: “Queens was founded as the Charlote Female Institute in 1857 on College Street uptown. Later, as soldiers returned from World War II, Queens opened our doors for a time to young men. Once the banking industry took off in Charlote, we opened our McColl School of Business. There’s tremendous synergy between the city and the school.”

The connection has grown deeper over time. “As the digital divide became clear, Queens created the Center for Digital Equity to expand access and teach technical literacy,” Oddi said. “It’s been part of our DNA from the very beginning — this beautiful call and response between the city and what Queens offers.”
Heeding the call Knowing how to respond isn’t always easy.
