Queens Mourns the Passing of Wayland H. Cato Jr.
Wayland H. Cato Jr. passed on Nov. 4, 2023. Cato Jr. was a longtime Queens supporter and instrumental in the establishment of the Cato School of Education in 2008. Through his generosity, The Wayland H. Cato Jr. School
of Education Endowed Scholarship and North Carolina Teaching Fellows Endowment Fund were also established. In addition, he endowed the Wayland H. Cato Jr. Chair of Leadership in Queens’ McColl School of Business.
Queens University President Dan Lugo said, “The Cato family’s contributions to Queens have been profound and far-reaching, and we are grateful for their extraordinary generosity towards our university and the broader educational landscape.”
Along with his father and brother, he established Cato Corporation, a successful women’s apparel retailer with over a thousand stores across the United States.
In 2011, Queens’ McColl School of Business inducted him into the Carolinas Entrepreneur Hall of Fame for his contributions to shaping the economic landscape of the Carolinas and beyond.

Queens Mourns the Loss of Cynthia H. Tyson, Ph.D.
Cynthia H. Tyson, Ph.D., who passed away on Jan. 7, 2023 was a beloved member of the Queens family. A native of England, she joined Queens in 1969 as a faculty member of the English department. Aſter 10 years,
she was named dean and vice president for academic affairs until her departure in 1985.
In 2009, she joined Queens’ Board of Trustees, serving two
consecutive terms and was named a Trustee Emerita in 2017. She then served another term from 2018 through 2022. In recognition of her lifelong selfless dedication to service, she was awarded the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award in 2013.
“During her time on our Board of Trustees, Cynthia served as an esteemed advisor who provided thoughtful and valuable guidance to us during some of our most challenging times. We cannot express how thankful we are for her dedicated service to our university,” said Lugo. “It was clear that Queens held a special place in Cynthia’s heart, and her shining legacy will never fade on our campus.”
