Charlotte BusinessWoman of the Year

Queens named Kandi Deitemeyer, Ph.D., president of Central Piedmont Community College, as the 2023 Charlote BusinessWoman of the Year. Now in its 38th year, this event celebrates female leaders who have made significant contributions to the Charlote region through outstanding leadership and achievement.

Deitemeyer brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her role as Central Piedmont Community College’s fourth president. Her extensive and diverse background in community college administration spans over three decades across North Carolina, Kentucky, and Florida.

Deitemeyer, a community college graduate herself,

values the transformative impact that Central Piedmont has had on countless individuals and the community. She is passionate about the student experience and is unwavering in her commitment to ensuring student success.

“When I consider the women selected before me for this award, and when I reflect on the distinguished members of the selection commitee, I am both honored and humbled,” said Deitemeyer. “To be chosen as the 2023 Charlote BusinessWoman of the Year is such a wonderful distinction. I am so pleased and appreciative to join such an auspicious group of women.”

Isabel Wilkerson Captivates a Sold-Out Crowd

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson recently visited Queens to discuss her latest book, “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents.” Wilkerson offered a profound and insightful exploration of the unspoken caste system, calling it an “invisible scaffold” that has shaped America and continues to affect our lives today.

Wilkerson began her talk by SPRiNG 2024

tracing the history of caste in America, from its roots in slavery and Jim Crow to its modern-day manifestations in areas such as health care, education, and the criminal justice system.

Examining the ways in which caste has shaped the American experience, Wilkerson explained how caste is a fundamental problem in American society that has prevented us from fully realizing the ideals of equality and opportunity.

Wilkerson’s talk was met with a standing ovation. Audience members were deeply moved by her insights and her powerful call to action.

Blue Zones and Longevity Expert Brings Insight

The Learning Society also welcomed National Geographic writer and renowned explorer Dan Buetner in February. The award-winning journalist discussed his findings

in exploring the five places in the world where people live the longest, healthiest lives — dubbed “Blue Zone” hotspots.

For more than 35 years, the Learning Society of Queens has brought notable experts to Queens and the broader Charlote community to provide new perspectives, inspiration, and transformative leadership that extends the reach of a liberal arts education far beyond the classroom.
