Nautical Research Journal

rig. Nevertheless, it is both an attractive subject and a suitable platform for learning the techniques necessary for replicating a fully-framed vessel rather more quickly and cheaply than jumping into building a ship-rigged warship.

T ose familiar with Antscherl’s Swan series will not be disappointed by his presentation of a much simpler subject.

As is customary, he details the entire process from start to fi nish with meticulous attention to detail. He guides his reader through the entire task one step at a time, using a thoroughly informative and very clear combination of written descriptive instruction and extensive illustration, both in the form of clear photographs and, when necessary, detailed sketches. T ree large sheets of very clear plans provide full-size 1:48-scale patterns for frames and other crucial elements (though the author does note that they may need adjustment to match the individual builder’s model as it progresses) and include close to exhaustive detail coverage of the vessel, its equipment, and its rig.

T e one defi ciency noted is the author’s periodic reference back to his Swan series, particularly the fi rst volume, for more extensive explanation of some of the processes. One can appreciate that Antscherl may be reluctant to repeat the entirety of a previous description or, perhaps, his publisher wished to keep down the size of the fi nished book, but it is a rather unfortunate element in a work that is presented as intended as especially suitable for those looking to take on building a fully- framed model for the fi rst time.

Like all SeaWatch publications, the production qualities of Antscherl’s book are to the highest standards. When combined with his meticulous instructions, this make his work an essential and enjoyable guide to successfully undertaking a task that some may view with dread.
