Vol. 63, No. 3 autumn 2018 192 Summary

In the last couple of decades, the British archives have made dramatic strides in making their collections accessible to the world through their websites. It is no longer unreasonable for an interested researcher far away to design and execute a sophisticated historical search plan. With advance planning, some luck, and an airline ticket to London, you can learn surprisingly more about Royal Navy sailing warships than you might have expected. At the very least, you will know far more than a modeler who is satisfi ed with the fi rst couple of paragraphs of a Wikipedia entry. My search has greatly enhanced my appreciation of my chosen target ship, and given me years of pleasure and adventure. You can do the same for your favorite model project.

Go with a prepared mind and you will be able to take advantage of chance fi nds that will inevitably come along on your journey. Much to my astonishment, I found an unusual midshipman’s log at a regional archive, a contemporary model I was not expecting, and a surprise on the wall at Westminster Abbey. T ere is more out there than you might think. Good hunting.
