Nautical Research Journal Letters to the editor To the Editor:

T e editorial of the Spring 2016 issue of the Nautical Research Journal indicated that the idea of reviving the “Modeler’s Gallery” in the Journal was receiving serious consideration.

Members were asked to provide feedback regarding: (a) whether or not we would want such a feature included in the Journal and, if so, would we support it by contributing photographs of completed models.

(b)

should there be criteria for the quality of the models and who should make judgements as to which models should appear?

(c) how much space should be devoted to a gallery?

Since a “Modeler’s Gallery” has not subsequently appeared in the Journal, apparently most respondents were not in favor of it.

But now that the Guild is attempting to fi ll the void created by the demise of the Ships in Scale magazine, might now be an appropriate time to reconsider adding a “Modeler’s Gallery” to the Journal? T e “Reader’s Showcase” of Ships in Scale was not very large, but it did show examples of reader’s completed models. If one of the objectives of the Guild is to attract new members and to interest a younger audience in ship modeling, I would think that seeing examples of our work would help do the trick. For potential new members who are not currently familiar with the Journal, I feel that seeing a few examples of what the ‘research’ part of the Journal can lead to would be an attention-grabbing introduction prior to delving into the more academic (and sometimes dry) articles about specifi c subjects of research and modeling. As the old saying goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words”.
