NEWS ROUND-UP Vancouver Airport opens latest US trans-border store

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has inaugurated a second World Duty Free walkthrough outlet at its US trans-border area, TRBusiness can reveal. Located in the US

Terminal area after security, the recently opened outlet stocks a broad range of merchandise tailored towards US-bound passengers, according

to Vancouver Airport Authority Vice President Commercial Development Scott Norris (pictured above). New brands include Herschel, Radley,

Fjällräven and Mywalit in the travel category and Casio, Daniel Wellington, Sekonda and Anne Klein in the watches and jewellery category. “We are also continuing to work on

redeveloping our pre-security domestic food court and shopping area and extending the international pier, creating

an entirely new commercial zone and local food market within a uniquely YVR terminal environment,” Norris revealed [read the full interview on page 67]. A pop-up style concept featuring

cosmetic brand Whoo will also arrive at the international terminal in the coming months, flanked by a soon-to-be announced fashion concept to accompany existing Burberry and Cartier premium boutiques. Plans for the new commercial spread

follow a successful 2017 for the airport, in which passenger traffic rose 8.4% to 24.2m. This translated into robust retail growth,

with duty free revenue posting a +11% increase year-on-year. One major influencer has been Air

Canada’s Vancouver to Delhi service, which having launched last year has now been expanded year-round off the back of strong passenger demand. YVR is capitalising on this momentum by undertaking a thorough review

Uruguay’s Siñeriz Group has tapped demand for particular products by ‘zoning’ best-selling categories at its retail locations. Present on either side of the Brazil-

Uruguay border, the retailer has transformed its stores into commercial and tourism attractions. Siñeriz has taken note of the growing

global trend for craft beers. “We have a special place dedicated

exclusively to beers around the world,” said Siñeriz Free Shop Director Gandhi Abdullah [see page 64 for the full interview].

200 labels” available and that the dedicated beer space has had a “huge impact” since opening at its stores last year. Other areas appeal to those seeking

souvenirs, while another has been curated to house commodities like hot drinks . “There are two more new spaces, a

Uruguayan corner, where we have all products made in Uruguay and a coffee and tea corner, ” said Abdullah. He adds that consumers know what

items to look for when navigating the store. Despite the challenging headwinds of

previous years, Siñeriz is at the forefront of regional gains from border tourism. Looking ahead, Abdullah concludes that

“even with a very new flagship store, we are renewing a very big part of it. The objective is to be one step ahead to [meet] the needs of the travel retail consumer”.

of its concession programme across the terminals. As reported last year, YVR embarked on a

series of ambitious retail transformations at its US and international terminals. New boutiques to the international

terminal included Gucci, Bulgari, Burberry and Bottega Veneta conveniently located past World Duty Free Group’s main walkthrough store. The Dufry-owned retailer is the incumbent DF concessionaire.

Starboard to launch on three new ships

LVMH-owned Starboard Cruise Services is in the midst of launching three vessels with its cruise line partners that President & CEO Beth Neumann says ‘will raise the bar for onboard retail’. Carnival Horizon launches this Spring,

with Carnival committed to transforming the ship’s onboard retail experience. “We were thrilled to be awarded

Carnival’s latest newbuild where we’ve planned several important firsts for the cruise line – from stand-alone boutiques appearing for the first time on Carnival ships, to renowned brands that will also make their debut for the first-time on board Carnival,” said Neumann. “In addition to the Carnival Horizon,

we’re also launching Royal Caribbean’s newest and biggest ship, Symphony of the Seas [...] and, of course, there is tremendous anticipation for Celebrity Edge launching later this year. Starboard will bring to life a retail experience that’s every bit as groundbreaking as this notable ship.”
