NEWS ROUND-UP Pac Can Duty Free buyout leverages DFA growth
Duty Free Americas (DFA) has ‘bought out’ rival operator Pac Can Duty Free to construct a new duty free ‘mega store’, TRBusiness can reveal. Pac Can Duty Free is located on the
Pacific Highway connecting the towns of Blaine, Washington and Surrey on the Canada-US border. The store operates close to the DFA shop
in Blaine, Washington, with the retailer planning to demolish the existing structure before work begins on the new one. DFA president Leon Falic (pictured right)
told TRBusiness: “We are planning a major renovation there, which will include both lots. We will build a brand new duty free store. Details will follow in the next couple of months.” DFA has plenty to look forward to in
Latin American countries such as Panama in 2018, where it is creating something ‘transformational’ following the capture of two of the three Panama Tocumen International Airport Terminal One tenders last year. Things are also looking up in Brazil, where the economy is coming back and
its stores have been completed. The year has also started well in Macau, where DFA unveiled a new and extended store at the Venetian Resort Hotel in January. The outlet, which welcomes around
50,000 people daily, offers a wide selection of fragrances, elegant dress and casual watches, gifts, jewellery, travel-related merchandise and liquor and tobacco. “We have bought in a lot of Korean
brands, which are very strong, and created big partnerships with the likes of Lancôme
and Dior,” said Falic. “Our main business there is beauty and we have partnerships with a lot of the [beauty] companies.” Falic adds that DFA is building a 10,000sq
m multi-category duty free mall in Uruguay set for completion in July or August and says the challenge is to be more competitive. “We are sometimes very close to local
market pricing. We need that differential which sometimes the brand owners need to realise, especially in the US which is a very cheap market.”
Heinemann Americas unveils third cruise location
Heinemann Americas has launched its third cruise duty free store with Carnival Cruise Line onboard Carnival Fantasy. This follows grand openings of its first
two duty free outlets aboard the Carnival Liberty and Carnival Ecstasy. As reported, Heinemann won retail
concessions onboard four Carnival cruise ships (Carnival Fantasy, Carnival Ecstasy, Carnival Liberty and Carnival Spirit) serving the North American and Australasian markets. Retail operations onboard the four cruise
liners will span more than 1,220sq m. Retail activity on Carnival Spirit, based
in Sydney, Australia is due to begin in June. In an exclusive interview with TRBusiness
Heinemann Americas CEO Nadine Heubel (pictured right) said: “We are thrilled to have
been chosen by Carnival Cruise Line – the world’s most popular cruise line carrying five million passengers a year – to serve as their newest onboard duty free retailer. “We value their trust in us and look
forward to continuing this partnership with Carnival well into the future. “Over the next year we look forward
to strengthening our presence in the US market and unveiling some exciting innovations in the cruise retail space.” With 27.2 million people expected to
cruise in 2018 and 27 new ocean, river and speciality ships scheduled to debut (source: Cruise Lines International Association) Heubel is relishing the opportunity to capitalise on this burgeoning market. She added: “This new partnership
confirmed our observation that there is a growing need for duty free retailers in this space and represents a wonderful growth opportunity for Heinemann Americas.”
