Merci.
What’s in a name? Niels G. Cordes had a very special reason to visit Cordes-sur-Ciel in Tarn Striking the right Cordes
Last issue we printed a photo of Cordes-sur-Ciel by reader Niels G. Cordes. Coincidence? We asked him and here’s what he told us…
I’m originally from Germany and fi rst saw the name on a map in 1971 as an eight-year old. My family drove from northern Germany to Spain on vacation, but unfortunately we never stopped there back then. I’ve lived in Texas and Maryland since the mid ‘80s and so Cordes, as it was known then, was even farther away. My wife and I vacationed in France in 2012 and I fi nally got to see my little magical village and stayed for a few days in what was then Cordes-sur-Ciel.
I have been back several times since then and even became friends with a gallerist there. The last time I went there, in November 2022, I found out from a visit to the town hall that a family by the name of Cordes lived there a few hundred years ago but emigrated to Germany, likely a Huguenot family. You will fi nd that family in northern Germany, which is not surprising since it is predominantly Protestant. So, the answer to your question is that it is quite possible that my ancestors originated from that village or region of France. My birthday is July 14, and perhaps that is also a reason for my great affi nity for the beautiful country and people of France. Niels G. Cordes Cordes-sur-Ciel is featured this issue, in our Slow Tourism in Tarn feature on page 70.
A FILM RECOMMENDATION After reading your reference [in Take it slow in Tarn-et-Garonne, Issue 194] to the superb yet harrowing fi lm Le Vieux Fusil, I rewatched it recently, for the fi rst time in about 20 years. It is so powerful, and I urge fellow readers to watch it. Janet Gordon, Stratford-upon-Avon

I have just received France Today for April/May and I had the pleasant surprise of seeing the recipe for rabbit rillettes. Also, on the cover of the magazine was the garden and castle of Villandry that I visited a few years ago. Good and very pleasant articles to read. Thank you.
