Historic Bordeaux is one of France’s most complete city break destinations (page 88)
Bienvenue!
Salut, mes amis, and welcome to this, our unashamedly sun-kissed edition of France Today, which we hope serves as a useful guide to planning your vacances d’été. For those of you with nothing yet booked (hurry!), the words “Where shall we go this year?” will bring a certain frisson of excitement, not least because the menu of French holiday options is so rich and varied. Will it be a seaside stay or some rural relaxation? A northern cultural escape or southern sun? Hotel pampering or a sociable chambre d’hôtes? I am just back from visiting Tarn, where I explored some of the most picturesque villages on Earth, let alone France. Plan a summer trip to this lovely department in Occitanie and you too could be wandering carefree around such gorgeous places as Puycelsi, Cordes-sur-Ciel and Castelnau- de-Montmiral, all Plus Beaux Villages just a medieval stone’s throw from Toulouse. Or perhaps you imagine yourself lazing on an idyllic French beach for two weeks, in which case our ‘pick of the plages’ feature will have you

packing a swimsuit and clutch of novels in no time. Our selection offers a beach for all tastes, from the expansive and the family-friendly to curious coves and surfer hotspots.
City breakers heading off for some culture and café time this summer may fi nd inspiration in our guides to two ever-evolving grandes villes, Grenoble and Bordeaux, while Channel-hoppers in search of some fresh air, history and châteaux will surely love the green spaces of northern Hauts-de-France. If you fancy a themed visit, try Le Mans (motorsport) or the Châteauneuf-du- Pape area (wine), or time your visit to coincide with one of France’s countless superb festivals – there is a fête for everyone to enjoy. Alors, wherever you go this summer, I wish
you all bon voyage… and do email me with your travel tales and photos. À la prochaine!
