FESTIVAL ENERGY FIRES GROWTH,
IDEAS AND VALUE Napthens LLP and AfterAthena were delighted to participate in this year’s Festival of Business, hosted by Lancashire Business View.
The event brought together professionals, institutions and businesses from across the region to share insights, build connections and discuss key challenges and opportunities they face in today’s business landscape.
Partner Richard Robinson and legal director Chris King held a masterclass on growth.
The session was well received, with attendees interacting and welcoming the practical advice and real-world examples shared.
The AI and technology panel
Melissa Conlon, commercial director at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) North West in Samlesbury, said she believed the UK was a significant player in terms of finance and healthcare AI.
She added: “The problem we have is in not being able to scale something, we haven’t got a Microsoft or an Amazon, we haven’t got a Google in this country.
“We’ve got certain challenges around investment. We’ve got a lot of great start up tech companies but we don’t have the level of investment that other countries have.
“Talent is a big issue, a lot of our good practitioners and researchers are being scooped up by US conglomerates and they are leaving us.”
She also highlighted the ways manufacturing businesses in the region are harnessing AI, including quality control, predictive maintenance and the use of smart workbenches.
Karen Buchanan
said: “You talk about the global strategy, I’ve got these 16-year-olds coming into college chomping at the bit to be let loose on AI.
“We’ve huge enthusiasm there and it is about setting it free.”
She told the festival that the college was using AI in its business, training it to know the language it uses and “how we speak.”
Manufacturers are starting to realise AI has
the biggest transformational impact of anything that has been deployed
Melissa said: “In terms of AI we are building and developing a lot of lower cost solutions that smaller manufacturers can invest in.
“Manufacturers are starting to realise AI has the biggest transformational impact of anything that has been deployed.”

As a result, administrative staff were using it to automatically generate contracts, letters and marketing material. Karen added that the use of AI in teaching was “mind blowing”.
She added: “We are building an AI strategy, which says this is our vision and these are the steps we are going to take to get there. Everyone needs to have that.”
