We help businesses look at the feasibility of franchising and not every business can be franchised.
It’s got to be something that can be replicated and the business owner that wants to franchise has to have the right reasons. Franchising is not easy but, if it’s done right, it can work really well.
There’s got to be something about their business that can be trained, put into manuals, system and processes so somebody that is not from the business is able to repeat its success.
Some businesses are really successful because of the personality and the character of the person behind it and you can’t bottle that and you can’t train that. When we speak to the person running the business it is making sure they understand they won’t continue what they’re doing now. They will become a coach, a mentor, a trainer, an advisor, sometimes they’ll feel like a mother to franchisees. Franchisees need to understand it is their own business and they are not going to have a boss a that’s going to drive them or set timescales that they’ve got to work.
Franchising can take the risk out of them having their own business but it can’t take the hard work out. There has been a change in culture in the UK. People are looking at being self-employed more but there is a lack of understanding of franchising. If you look at schools, colleges, universities, the amount of time that’s spent on business studies courses, covering franchising is far too little. On the positive side it can be a fantastic route to make a difference.
James Sedgwick, head of membership and standards, British Franchise Association
Franchising is a simple relationship between the franchisor and the franchisee. We often liken it to a marriage. So, you have ups and downs.
We’ve seen an increase in turnover and an increase in the number of franchisees since 2018 and we have also seen that commercial failure is still under five percent for franchise businesses as well, which has been the same for the last 25 years.
