We predominantly teach primary age children coding and computing skills and we’ve seen a lot of franchises coming into the space.
We see a lot of interest and we can have anything from 40 to 50 applications a month and I maybe meet with two or three of them.
We’ve had a number
of franchisees who have come in and tried to have other ventures, or remain in part-time employment. It never quite hits because we all know as business owners and founders that it doesn’t work like that. It’s 40, 50, 60 hours a week sometimes.
Passion for the business is really important to me. The brand Jam Coding, is named after a man called James Mason, who was a Lancashire gentleman, and my uncle. He was about helping other people and providing other opportunities to people and giving people skills. That was his ethos, and he instilled that in me.
So, when I give this brand over to people to run elsewhere in the country, that’s a big decision. The ones that stick at it have the passion, you can see that drive in them.
We’re looking at our first international franchise and we’ve got more than 300 co-coaches, as we call our staff, working across the country now.
Ultimately, if I asked myself, what was that purpose for franchising? It was to teach more kids, and do it quicker, and we now teach tens of thousands of kids a week. So, it works, but it’s a hell of a journey.

We recently published the results of our national survey, sponsored by NIC Services Group, which revealed that the UK franchise sector contributes £19.1bn to the UK economy with an average turnover per franchise unit of £400,000. There are currently 1,009 franchise systems in the UK, with 50,421 franchise units. Significant growth was seen in both the personal services and the hotel and catering sectors, up 53 per cent and 34 per cent respectively since 2018.

A franchise model is an enhanced form of intellectual property and business licence; it assumes that the franchisor has a successful business that can be packaged together and implemented across different territories. Franchises often fail due to a lack of capital investment, ability to receive centralised marketing and training and territory selection. Any business looking to franchise needs to be confident that its model is both successful and transferrable.
