SPOTLIGHT Jacob Baker

Business development manager One Stop Business Finance

SUB36

HOW WE’VE HELPED SHAPE THE NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERS

The Sub36 awards have been a conveyor belt for the brightest emerging talent in Lancashire.

From managing partners at law firms and managing directors at recruitment companies to a technical director at a manufacturer of personal, home and pet care products

They have all had different paths on their business journeys but one thing remains – the impact the awards have had on shaping them as leaders in their fields.

Pauline Wild, now managing partner at Forbes Solicitors, told us winning Professional of the Year in 2015 at the Sub36 Awards ‘was humbling and incredibly motivating’.

She adds: “It felt like real recognition from the Lancashire business community for the hard work and dedication I’d put into my career by that stage.

“The award gave me a huge boost in confidence and encouraged me to step forward as a leader.

“It also raised my profile, opening doors to new opportunities and connections.”

Dave Walker, managing director from +24, picked up the Lancastrian of the Year award in 2018, says winning was ‘a surreal and deeply proud moment’.

He says: “It is one thing to work hard, but being celebrated by your local business community is a unique thrill.

“That recognition acted as a catalyst for my journey, providing the credibility and confidence needed to scale +24 to the transformational growth agency it is today.”

Laura Leyland, managing director and co-founder from Fresh Perspective, won Entrepreneur of the Year in 2018. She says: “The Sub36 awards gave me so much confidence as my business had only been going for two years.

“I leveraged the Sub36 by connecting with everyone in my categories and meeting up with them to get to know them.

“I’m still in touch with them now and some of them introduced me to different businesses that are our clients today.”

Austin Waddecar, now director of product at fulfilmentcrowd, won the Innovator of the Year title in 2018. He says: “When my name was called out, it made me feel like a million dollars and there were some brilliant memories. Being recognised for what you do matters.”

Kate Horton, technical director from Group55, won the Made In Lancashire award in 2020 for creating hand sanitiser during COVID and now designs scents for celebrities and influencers.

She says: “My Sub36 award showed I was a leader and it helped my progression. It gave me a lot of confidence that I could achieve something like that.”

Tell us about your role and the business you work for:

I meet with business owners face- to-face to strengthen relationships and support SMEs with everything from quick funding solutions to more complex finance requirements.

What are your ambitions? Where do you see yourself in five years?

My goal is to continue building the One Stop Business Finance brand in the North West. I’m working hard to build my network. I want to be the go-to person when businesses can’t access traditional finance from banks or second-tier lenders.

Tell us something about you that people might not know. What do you do away from work? Any interesting hobbies?

I’m a professional drummer and I have performed at iconic venues such as The Royal Albert Hall in London and Birmingham Symphony Hall. I’m also into my sports and love football, padel and golf. I also ride motorbikes and try to get out exploring on it when the sun’s out.

What’s the value to you and your business of being part of the Sub 36 network?

I enjoy the different approach to networking. Recent events have been activity-based which is the best way of networking. It’s the perfect ice-breaker. I also see the benefit of building long- lasting relationships with professionals who are similar in age.
