FAMILY BUSINESS

“They’re more than colleagues, they’re friends. Knowing that what we do supports their families as well as our own is incredibly fulfilling.

“I love working with Rob, it’s not just a job for us, it’s part of who we are. I genuinely love getting up and coming to work every day.”

Rob adds: “The very best part of being a part of Partington’s is working with my sister.

“Together, we see ourselves as custodians of the business for the next generation, and we’re really excited about where it’s heading.”

Established more than 80 years ago, it specialises in holiday home ownership and short breaks, with a family-friendly ethos.

Three members of the fifth generation of the Partington family now work in various roles within the business, which employs around 250 people.

Since taking the reins, Rob and Andrea Partington have changed the structure of the board to allow non-family members to take up positions.

The acquisition of 166 acres of land surrounding Windy Harbour for a new leisure development will represent a £75m investment in the region and is designed to help futureproof the business for the next generation and beyond.

For Andrea, the family business may have spanned generations but it’s all about legacy, connection and purpose.

She says: “There’s something really special about knowing our great grandparents started this business.

“And then there’s the people – we have team members who’ve spent their whole careers with us.

JAMES E. HATCH & SON Timber and machinery manufacturer

James E. Hatch & Son is a third-generation family business serving the UK timber industry through cladding manufacturing and machinery services.

Four family members are actively involved across the business and, earlier this year, it enjoyed success winning the Family Business category at the Red Rose Awards.

Growth has been shaped by adaptation and diversification. Following challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic, the business expanded its customer base and service offering, working more closely with architects and providing turnkey machinery solutions.

Turnover increased from £517,671 in 2022-23 to £665,702 in 2024-25, while net profits rose from £167,681 to £257,944.

The business offers specialist repairs and maintenance for woodworking machinery, carried out by founder James and grandson Jacob.

Its coating line has also gone from strength to strength following the addition of James’ grandsons Frazer and Jacob to the business.

Frazer says the company is focused on continuous improvement. He adds: “Our plan is to improve operational efficiency and pursue excellence across both departments, while continuing to support our existing customer base to the high standards they have come to expect.”

Our ambition is to become the first name people think of when hiring, helping local

organisations build brilliant teams and creating more jobs in the community

Earlier this year the company celebrated its 10th anniversary and has grown revenue by 29.1 per cent to £711,000. It employs 12 people and has worked with hundreds of businesses and thousands of candidates across the region.

Laura says the business was “built on family values” and was “determined to be a recruitment business that did things differently”.

The sisters have reflected on their journey from working at their kitchen tables to building a thriving business and community.

Laura says: “2025/26 has been the start of a major growth phase for us. Continuing this trajectory, our goal is to exceed £1m in 2027- 28 and £1.2m the following year.

“We’re incredibly proud to be a Lancashire business and want to play a part in supporting the county’s growth over the next three years.

“Our ambition is to become the first name people think of when hiring, helping local organisations build brilliant teams and creating more jobs in the community.”
