We want to keep breaking the mould

through bold innovation, category-defining products and market-leading nutrition, while staying proudly family-led

Employing 12 people, including three family members, the business is based on Morecambe’s Central Promenade and has outlets across the North West.

In June the business celebrated the 90th birthday of family matriarch Mary Powney.

With turnover of £1.4m, the business is run by Mary’s son Tom Powney, grandson Luke Powney and Luke’s mum Laura Domville.

Luke represents the sixth generation of the family, having sold his first pair of shoes while helping out after school at the age of seven.

Tom says working in a family business “presents a unique set of challenges but also greater rewards than the average career” because “you truly are all in it together”.

Looking to the future, the business is preparing for the opportunities expected to come from the Eden Project Morecambe.

Tom says: “The flagship store and head office is located less than 100m from the Eden site.

“The next two years will be spent getting ‘Eden

ready’ with changes to the store layout and our brand profile.”

NUTREE LIFE Food manufacturer

Nutree Life specialises in vegan and gluten- free nutrition. Founded by father-and-son- in-law team Patrick Mroczak and Adam Hodgkinson, the business has grown into the UK’s only dedicated 100 per cent vegan and gluten-free manufacturing facility, with six family members involved.

Growth has been driven by continuous investment and innovation.

Patrick says: “From building a strong private label customer base through quality and service, we have continually reinvested in innovation, state-of-the-art machinery and a purpose-built facility.”

The business has also developed its own brands, including YuBi Bar and Jade & Joy,

helping it expand into new markets in the UK and overseas.

Patrick adds: “We want to keep breaking the mould through bold innovation, category- defining products and market-leading nutrition, while staying proudly family-led, customer- focused and grounded in the values that got us here.”

In its latest accounts, covering the year to March 2025, the company said it expects to significantly increase sales and diversify its brand portfolio and product offering over the next 12 months.

Turnover stood at £5.7m for the financial year 2026 and the business is forecasted to grow to £14.3m by March 2029.
