Graham Wilkinson, senior manager for IT at Ribby Hall Village

Looking after the environment is clearly in our interest. We have 130 acres of beautiful countryside here.

Graham Wilkinson

We’ve been on our journey for quite a long time, starting with small steps, things like heating controls in all our cottages. But even small steps are positive and you can start building on that.

In 2022 we installed a combined heat and power unit for our pool and 48 per cent of our electricity is generated on site, saving 700 tonnes of carbon in two years through that process.

Our sports facilities are heated by air source pump and we also have solar in plans for our activity centre.

We operate on the basis of continuous improvement when the opportunity arises.

The key thing for us is how do we bring all that together as more of a coherent strategy and build on what we have done.

Sometimes as a business we don’t shout enough about what we have done and where we are going.

Ian Steel, ‘keeper of the flame’ at Atkinson Coffee Roasters

Atkinson’s is a family business made up of six family members. We operate four sites and we have 56 members of staff.

We spent two-and-a-half years working to get B Corp certification and it’s something that is ingrained deeply in the business. It impacts on every decision that gets made.

It’s great when you can see that happening with members of staff, changing the way we source things.

B Corp makes you measure yourself all the time, it is a rigorous process. We are also a member of the Rainforest Alliance.

Among our initiatives we now collect all our coffee waste, which is an incredibly complex product, and we recycle it, turning it into energy.

And we also encourage the refill culture, which has been successful. We now encourage customers in our shops to bring their bags back and we will refill them and give them a discount. It’s simple and a win-win.
