JLC Groundworks is a civil engineering and groundworks specialist. The company works with main contractors, private developers and local authorities, and has worked on projects ranging from housing developments to Fleetwood Town’s training ground.

Eric Kitchen launched his business in 1963 by driving to local car and commercial vehicle retailers to collect worn-out brake shoes and returning them, refurbished, the next day. The business grew and his family has continued his legacy. Today it operates branches in Lancaster, Barrow, Blackpool, Kendal and Penrith, stocking 300,000 items and operating a fleet of 85 delivery vans. The year’s profits include selling off an investment holding which brought in £1.3m.

Castle provides a complete range of packaging services. As well as stocking and supplying products such as branded and presentation packaging, tapes and adhesives, the company also offers services including warehousing, inventory management and audits to help streamline its customers’ packaging operations. Revenues increased by more than a third, up to £19m.


Simpsons Beverages, Blackpool


Simpsons develops, formulates, manufactures and supplies flavours for the drinks industry, serving customers such as milkshake manufacturers, distilleries, breweries, bottlers and canning companies. The business began with William Herbert Simpson selling fruit squashes door-to-door in 1934. His family continue to run the business, with a board of directors made up entirely of Simpson family members.

Ashvin is a recycling company specialising in copper and other non-ferrous metals. The previous accounts only spanned six months, but were still enough to maintain a place in the Hot 100. The latest accounts cover a full 12 months and see turnover climb to £81.5m, resulting in pre-tax profits just shy of £3m. Over the year, Ashvin invested more than £1m in replacing old machinery with new.
