MAKING THREE WISHES
With the election done and dusted and Labour’s newly-elected ministers gathering around the cabinet table, what do Lancashire businesses need from the government as it starts its term of office?
Lancashire Business View posed that question to business leaders, asking them for their ‘three wishes’ to drive the county’s economy in the right direction.
Miranda Barker, chief executive of East Lancashire Chamber of Commerce, singles out
three ‘asks’ from its business manifesto to the incoming government.
She says: “We’d like to see the devolution of business support funding so we can do ‘transformational’ things, that will have really powerful economic benefits for Lancashire, with really clear ambition. We need a long-term regional business and economic plan with funding.
“We would also like a national and regional government commitment to the expansion of investment zones, to enable us as a county to lever in more private sector investment.
“And a long-term commitment to climate policy and the energy transition, through either an Office of Climate Responsibility or National Climate Commission, would give the continuity of travel that industry needs to innovate.”
Wayne Wild, chair of the Darwen Town Deal, starts his ‘wish list’ with: “A party leader who completes at least a full four-five-year term, ideally two terms. We need boring stability, not charisma.”
He also wants: “A government that continues to support Lancashire devolution, continues to
