Althams launched as a tea merchant in 1874 and for nearly 100 years the travel desk played a minor role in the company’s success. It wasn’t until the rise of supermarkets in the late 1960s, when people no longer needed to visit specialist tea shops, that travel became the main source of revenues and later sole focus for the owners. Today, the company employs a workforce of more than 150, operates more than 31 branches across the North, and, bouncing back from the Covid-19 pandemic, registered more than £9m in sales.

K Steels can trace its history back to a Rossendale blacksmith plying his trade in the 1880s. Two generations later, the business launched in its current iteration as a steel stockholder offering specialist cutting services. The company serves the whole of the UK from its five-acre site. Revenues increased by nearly a third this year following the acquisition of Gissing and Lonsdale, as well as the relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions.

Lakeview Rest Homes, Lytham St Annes
Lakeview operates three care homes in Lytham St Annes. It had operated a fourth, but closed it after being unable to find enough staff. Today it employs a workforce of 99, and registered bumper profits of £4.2m on the back of high occupancy levels.

Despite disruptions, in which Covid-19 restrictions limited the supply of fish from China, ethical concerns required finding alternatives to Russian-sourced fish and inflation saw costs rise dramatically, the company was able to increase the volume of seafood sold, increase revenues by more than 57 per cent up to £52m and more than double its profits.

Jonesco, based in Preston with a subsidiary in Seclin, France, serves more than 60 countries around the world. The company began manufacturing mudguards for commercial vehicles in the 1960s. Then made of metal, they are now exclusively made of plastic. In recent years the range of plastic goods manufactured has expanded to include fire and safety, spill containment and storage products.

The group also owns and generates rental income from units at White Lund Industrial Park in Morecambe.
Ashbridge Independent School and Nursery, Preston
Ashbridge operates four nurseries for children up to the age of four and a day school from ages four to 11. With a focus on outdoors learning, the school’s purpose-built facilities are situated within extensive grounds which sit on the banks of the River Ribble. During the year, parent company 1989 Holdings acquired related businesses The Pantry @ Maxy Farm and the Salon @ Maxy Farm, which combined for total revenues of £7.9m.
