Paul O’Brien, head of sustainability at The Senator Group
We have always had an environmental consciousness. We have always looked at waste reduction and diversity and social pillars.
The business has a sustainability division, looking at waste management and innovation to bring back packaging and products.
We look at ways of refurbishing and donating them or recycling and sending them back into the supply chain.
Since 2020 the whole of our furniture manufacturing sector seems to have accelerated by 10 years in terms of sustainability.
We’ve now created a steering group and from there we’ve developed initiatives and a business strategy.
We have pledged to reduce our carbon emissions by 50 per cent by 2030 and by 100 per cent by 2040 for scope 1 and 2 and a scope 3 emissions target for 2050.
The steering group was set up because we decided we needed to understand the data. Once you do you can start making strategic decisions.
You also need to engage with your workforce and promote continuous improvement. We’ve had hundreds of ideas from them around net zero. They will generate ideas, especially frontline workers in a manufacturing environment.
You also need to engage with your suppliers and collaborate, bringing them with you on your journey.
David Stanley, chief executive of ELE Advanced Technologies
We recently hit the milestone of achieving our first level sustainability goals. Two years ago, we set out to create a 10-year plan and we were supported by UCLan in terms of where we wanted to go.
David Stanley
We knew we were doing the right things we just couldn’t quantify what we were doing.
We looked at our level 1 and 2
emissions and had a target to reduce them by 75 per cent within two years, which we achieved last December.
Our solar panels generate electricity, which we store. There’s probably 70 people on site today and we are using zero energy from the grid.
I’m really proud that this year we will produce 37 per cent of our usage. In terms of energy, we will save about £130,000.
Small changes can make a huge impact and our customers expect us to be ‘match fit’ in terms of environmental responsibility. They are also very innovative in terms of future technologies.
