APPRENTICESHIPS FUTURE-PROOF 160-YEAR-OLD BUSINESS

Here at James Hall & Co Ltd, we have an ongoing drive to develop our workforce through apprenticeships and training.

Our business turned 160 years old in 2023 and we need a skilled workforce to futureproof it for the decades ahead.

We are a fifth-generation, family business that is based in Preston, operating as SPAR UK’s primary retailer, wholesaler, and distributor for Northern England.

We are also a significant food manufacturer, and our family of brands include Clayton Park Bakery, Fazila Foods, Ann Forshaw’s, and the Great Northern Sandwich Company.

There are many areas where apprenticeships are contributing to the success of the business, and we have steadily implemented these across multiple departments in recent years.

In 2023 we had employees from accounts, facilities, health and safety, HR, manufacturing, marketing, retail, transport, trading and warehousing celebrating

apprenticeship success. From the outset, we link our business succession planning with apprenticeships and think ‘apprentice first’ when recruiting. We don’t just see a position as a job, it is a career development opportunity where skills can be strengthened through apprenticeships and training.

We offer apprenticeships from Level 2 to 7, and we work with five different providers and two universities to offer comprehensive training opportunities.

Our talent scouting begins with college leavers at careers events, and we support the development of employability skills in Lancashire’s young people through schools.

We have a keen eye on the future and growth areas for apprenticeships within the business include retail, supply chain, food technologist, and health and safety. The new Food and Drink Processer Apprenticeship is an exciting development with massive potential within the business.

Our IT director is supporting our ambition to futureproof the business through a Level 7 Artificial Intelligence AI Data Specialist Apprenticeship. Another employee is soon to start a Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Apprenticeship – one of the six green apprenticeships launched during King Charles III’s Coronation.

In 2023 we passed through the £1m mark spent on developing staff through apprenticeships since the levy was introduced in 2017, and we look forward to investing the next £1m in the years ahead.

OUR 15TH YEAR OF SUPPORTING APPRENTICES

At Speakman Contractors, apprentices are central to what we do. And nobody understands their value to our business more than our founder and managing director, who started out as an apprentice himself.

Chris Speakman joined the industry as an apprentice 30 years ago before launching his own family business in 2009.

We have supported businesses across the North West with a complete range of building services, recruiting and training more than 50 apprentices along the way.

Joint managing director Chris Speakman said: “We’re not just investing in the person - we have a responsibility for their lives, families, and lifestyles. We take that commitment seriously, whether individuals rise through the ranks or go out on their own.”

And the far-reaching benefits continue to pay dividends. Many of the individuals

trained by Speakman have gone on to found their own businesses which have become integral parts of the Speakman Contractors supply chain.

Chris added: “We see the positives in that. It allows us to build a flexible supply chain made up of people who understand how we work. We trust they have the skill set we need and the standards we expect for our customers because they’ve come from our own talent pool.”

spectrum of integrated services, from design and installation of electrical and lighting systems to building repairs and maintenance.

Local and national businesses rely on Speakman to function at full capacity and maintain peak productivity, from manufacturing, commercial, leisure and retail.

Speakman Contractors also supports the apprenticeship model in a wider sense, too, working in partnership with Burnley College, sitting on an advisory board to model how construction is taught to young people.

Chris added: “New technology emerges all the time, so we offer our insight, expertise, and training, as well as supplying test equipment for students to develop industry skills and knowledge.

“It’s all part of our culture as a business - investing in people, nurturing skills, and strengthening our local economy by helping to promote and develop talent.”
