HELPING TODAY’S

YOUNG PEOPLE BECOME TOMORROW’S PIONEERS

as someone who goes above and beyond, and shows great initiative.

Ben speaks highly of his growth at VEKA, sharing that his favourite aspect of his role is the great opportunities to learn ‘on the job’.

Looking ahead, he aims to continue his training while hopefully advancing within the company.

He is particularly proud of his personal development, noting: “At the start, I didn’t take my apprenticeship seriously. VEKA mentored me through this time and thankfully, I managed to turn it around, earning a Veka Hero and gaining a good reputation for myself.”

VEKA plc is one of the UK’s leading uPVC systems companies, and Burnley’s biggest employer.

As such, we are committed to nurturing local talent by investing heavily in training and development, creating apprenticeship opportunities across all departments.

With a significant surge in demand and a skills shortage to navigate, VEKA’s dedication to apprenticeships has proven more vital than ever, and in 2022 we embraced a two-pronged strategy to bridge the skills gap, which included the introduction of 10 new apprentices, demonstrating a robust investment in the future talent pool.

This year, the apprenticeship scheme at VEKA has been nothing short of transformative, not just for the apprentices themselves, but for the whole company.

The current apprentices are making remarkable strides, and their progress exemplifies VEKA’s commitment not only to training, but in truly developing the next generation of experts in the fenestration industry.

Here are just a few of our apprentice success stories:

KT Cook: BTEC HNC Certificate in Mechatronics

KT originally came to VEKA through work experience as she struggled in the school environment and showed a genuine interest in engineering.

She revels in the dynamic and hands-on nature of her role at VEKA, saying: “The favourite aspects of my job role are that I am able to work with people from all different

backgrounds, and can be hands-on, solve problems and fix machines.”

KT is ambitious, aiming to learn about different specialisms of engineering and would like to eventually progress into a leadership role. She takes pride in having broadened her skills, notably in communication and mechatronics.

She enjoys the camaraderie and support within the team and advocates for VEKA’s apprenticeship programme, emphasising her appreciation of the depth and variety of knowledge and learning methods available, both formally and peer-to-peer.

Ben Tudor: BTEC HNC Certificate in Mechatronics

Ben originally joined the team back in 2020 as an extrusion operator but recognising his capabilities, we soon offered him the opportunity to further develop his skillset with a mechatronics engineering apprenticeship.

He finds satisfaction in the learning opportunities at VEKA, saying: “I enjoy having the opportunity to learn from others and for them to allow me to try something myself, which means I’ve gained more confidence.”

Ben likes working within a team dynamic and praises his VEKA apprenticeship for its educational benefits, stating: “An apprenticeship with VEKA gives people an opportunity to learn a vast number of aspects within the engineering field. I really enjoy it.”

Ben Edwards: Level 2 Lean Manufacturing

Apprenticeship (specialising in Extrusion) Ben is praised by his supervisors and peers

Ben really appreciates the supportive atmosphere at VEKA, saying: “I feel everyone is there to help you. It’s a great place to find a job, and if it’s right for you and fits your personality, you’re offered a great path to your future career.”

Jack Bracken: BTEC HNC Certificate in Mechatronics

Jack enjoys the dynamic nature of his role at VEKA, which he says keeps him engaged. “Every day holds a new challenge, making it exciting to come in and discover new skills,” he states.

He is ambitious, aiming for a project management role post-apprenticeship. Jack’s proudest moment so far, he says, is contributing to the standardisation project in the lamination department, a significant step for our company.

Jack also highlighted his appreciation of our support during his transition to becoming a CAD engineer.

“When it was determined by occupational health that I would be unable to perform effectively as a maintenance engineer, VEKA really helped me, creating new training plans and investing in new equipment to allow me to become a CAD engineer instead.”

Understanding that today’s young people are tomorrow’s pioneers, we acknowledge the importance of nurturing talent by demonstrating its commitment to the personal and professional development of its apprentices and employees, to sustain its leading position in the uPVC industry.

Our apprenticeships serve as a powerful launchpad for ambitious individuals, empowering them to set their own boundaries and achieve their fullest potential.
