Petroc Prospectus | APPRENTICESHIPS WHAT ARE APPRENTICESHIPS?
An apprenticeship is a genuine job with an accompanying skills development programme. It provides you with the perfect combination of hands-on experience and a salary whilst also studying at college. You can study apprenticeships from Level 2 (equivalent to GCSEs) right up to Level 7 higher and degree apprenticeships.
ARE APPRENTICESHIPS RIGHT FOR ME?
As long as you are over 16, living in England and not in full-time education, then an apprenticeship could be perfect for you. What’s more, an apprenticeship will cost you nothing; it’s paid for by the Government and your employer. Apprenticeships are available across a huge range of industries, whether it’s construction, engineering, nursing or IT.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
As an apprentice, you will be required to work ‘on the job’ for about 80% of your time, with 20% of your time set aside for learning. You will learn the practical elements of your subject at work and the theoretical elements with Petroc whilst being supported by your employer.
As an apprentice you will have access to all of Petroc’s services and facilities including access to our learning centres and welfare advice.
By the end of your apprenticeship, you will have gained the skills and knowledge needed to progress in your chosen career - or you could move onto the next apprenticeship level.
Look out for this logo within the vocational section which highlights the apprenticeship options available!

If you’re unsure which sector you would like to gain an apprenticeship in, or you are finding it difficult to secure a placement, you may wish to undertake a Traineeship.
During your Traineeship you will gain the skills and experience needed for employment both at college and through a work experience placement.

WHAT DID OUR EMPLOYERS SAY? MID DEVON DISTRICT COUNCIL
“Employing apprentices is fantastic for the whole organisation, not only do they bring energy and creative ideas but many of our existing employees at Mid Devon District Council act as mentors to our apprentices and learning has become a two-way process. This is hugely beneficial to the apprentice, the mentor and the service area they work in.
We offer our apprentices extra training and development opportunities so they are in the best position possible to be able to progress further, which can include a higher level apprenticeship or the opportunity to apply for a role within the Council."
