WORK experience

When you’re at college, you will spend some of your learning time on industry placement or work experience either in Devon, across the region or even overseas. Whatever you study, work experience is an essential part of your study programme, and a successful work placement will look great on your CV.

Work placements will not only give you insight into the industry you are looking to work in, but will also provide you with an array of important skills needed in the working environment. We are proud to have strong links with local employers including the NHS, local councils, marketing businesses, solicitors, accountancy firms and engineering and manufacturing organisations.

Trips abroad will provide you with amazing opportunities to forge new friendships, experience new places, widen your horizons and make lasting memories. Erasmus+ is the European Union programme for education, training, youth and sport and provides fantastic opportunities to study, volunteer and gain work experience abroad. Last year, 153 of our students went abroad and in 2020/21 we plan to send over 200 students on 14 trips from a variety of courses. Past trips have included sports and fitness coaching in The Netherlands, outdoor learning and early years education in Sweden, and work experience in automotive garages in Spain.

CAREERS AND OUR curriculum

All of our courses are carefully selected to create a curriculum that will meet the needs of the workforce of the future. We monitor the regional, national and international job market to understand what future roles will need to be filled and ensure our students are trained to fill those roles.

Petroc has a particularly strong focus on Technology and Engineering; Health, Social Care and Education; and Creative Arts and Enterprise which are all areas viewed by the Government as being in demand both nationally and locally. As well as a focus on developing a curriculum fit for the industries of the future, we also consider how we can continue to make subjects even more topical and relevant to the issues of today - for example, with an ever-growing focus on sustainability and the environment, we ensure we weave suitable modules into our courses.

Our dedicated careers specialist offers independent, impartial advice, one-to-one careers appointments, workshops and support with job application and CV writing (based on the Gatsby benchmarks*).

*Following the Gatsby benchmarks, Petroc supports the needs of each learner through personal guidance and in developing a curriculum which links to careers and progression routes, through to further and higher education, or apprenticeships and the workplace.
