ASBESTSLACHTOFFERS VERENIGING NEDERLAND If you are confronted with an asbestos-related disease
Asbestslachtoffers Vereniging Nederland, AVN, is a patients’ association for people suffering from an asbestos-related disease and their families. The information provided by this association is available to everybody. Asbestslachtoffers Vereniging Nederland will help you, answer your questions, and listen to your problems. In addition, mem- bers of this association are given the oppor- tunity to get in touch with fellow patients and advice regarding legal guidance. The patients’ association AVN is a member of the Dutch cancer association Levenmetkanker. One of the sponsors is KWF Kankerbestrij- ding, the Dutch Cancer Society.
Questions for victims and their families If you are confronted with an asbestos-rela- ted disease, you will naturally have a lot of questions. Possibly, you have already heard and read a lot about these diseases. The
association’s website presents a lot of infor- mation about various subjects, including the causes, symptoms, types of asbestos-related diseases, and forms of treatment. As a result of the exposure to asbestos, bet- ween 500 and one thousand asbestos-related diseases are still being diagnosed each year. These particularly concern malign mesot- helioma, asbestosis, and asbestos-related lung cancer, colon cancer, and oesophageal cancer.
Contact with fellow patients Contact with fellow patients may offer emotional support. It is oſten felt as a relief to be able to talk to someone who under- stands what you are going through. Not just for the patients themselves, but also for family, friends and (surviving) relatives. AVN is able to help you get in touch with fellow patients. To this purpose, AVN has different regional offices across the Netherlands. Via these offices, you may meet people from your region who have gone through similar experiences as yourself. In addition, they will organise regional meetings where you can ask your questions and meet people who have also been confronted with asbe- stos-related diseases.
Legal guidance An asbestos-related disease may develop
as a result of exposure to asbestos. In many cases, this exposure will have taken place through a situation at work. Your employer, or the employer of your family member, may be legally liable. To avoid asbestos victims from having to go through a long legal battle with the employer concerned, the Dutch institute for asbestos victims, IAS, has been established. The IAS will advi- se, mediate, and inform on behalf of the government concerning the compensation for damages that may be claimed. If anyone is confronted with an asbestos-related di- sease, the legal aspect will not immediately be given top priority. However, it is impor- tant for victims to register with IAS as soon as possible in order to ascertain their rights. AVN will be able to help you complete the application form, to be submitted to IAS. In addition, members of AVN may receive assistance in the drawing up of an exten- sive dossier, which will include the work history and the exposure to asbestos. This will speed up the claim procedure. You may even find that you have a right to a higher compensation than the standard amount. Surviving relatives of asbestos victims may also be eligible for compensation. In a legal procedure against the employer, colleagues and former colleagues may be able to help. Together, you will remember more details.
From mission to objectives The mission of AVN has been interpreted into the following objectives: - Information: Improving the availability and accessibili- ty of information about asbestos-related diseases and their consequences, the legal possibilities, and the medical and legal de- velopments. Attention to new medicines - Contact with fellow patients: Offering emotional support thanks to con- tact with fellow patients. - Legal guidance: Offering legal guidance to mesothelioma patients and their surviving relatives who want to apply for an allowance according to government regulations and/or claim for damages. - Promotion of victims’ interests: Improving the quality and accessibility of the care for and social position of people suffering from an asbestos-related disease. - Own website:

The SCi-547 for the validation of new working methods and/or innovative tech- nologies regarding the removal of asbestos, for the purpose of classification according to risk class (for the benefit of SMA-rt) and the SCi-548 for the determination of the concentration of respirable asbestos fibres in the air during asbestos-removal projects.
