Wie heeſt er nog niet van gehoord dat asbest al in de klassieke oudheid werd gebruikt. De Egyptische farao’s werden zelfs met asbest gebalsemd en de Romeinen gebruikten het voor hun lampenpitten. In Nederland is voor- al (85 procent) wit asbest gebruikt, dat vaak verontreinigd was met amfibole soorten. Zowel in de bouw als in de scheepvaart zijn veelvuldig asbesthoudende materialen toegepast.


Sinds 1 juli 2002 is het gebruik van asbesthou- dende materialen verboden voor alle schepen conform de Schepenwet en SOLAS II-1/3-5. Echter niet in systemen met hoge temperatu- ren en drukken zoals nader is gespecificeerd in de genoemde wetgeving. Ondanks het verbod op asbesthoudende materialen, wordt aan boord van schepen nog altijd op uiteenlo- pende plaatsen asbest aangetroffen.


Bij inspecties is bijvoorbeeld asbest aange- troffen in branddekens, isolatiemateriaal, bepaalde afdichtingmiddelen, remvoerin- gen, schot- en plafondbekledingen, kabels, koorden, restanten, elektrische zekeringen, enzovoort. Bovendien blijken schepen die


oorspronkelijk asbestvrij waren soms alsnog asbest aan boord te hebben als gevolg van reparaties op een scheepswerf (en/of in later aangeschaſte reserveonderdelen).


Helaas komt asbest nog steeds veelvuldig voor en niet alleen in schepen, maar ook in gebouwen. Who hasn’t heard that asbestos was used in classical antiquity. The Egyptian pha- raohs were embalmed with asbestos and even the Romans used it for their wicks. In the Netherlands is especially (85%) white asbestos used, that was oſten contaminated with amphibole types. Asbestos-containing materials are frequently applied in shipping and buildings.


Since the first of July, 2002, the use of as- bestos-containing materials banned for all ships in accordance with the Schepenwet and SOLAS II-1/3-5. However not in systems with high temperatures and pressures as further specified in the said legislation. Despite the ban on asbestos-containing materials, it still occurs in various places on board ships. For example, asbestos is found in inspections by fire blankets, insulation material, certain sealing means, brake linings, bulkhead and ceiling linings, cables, cords, scrap, electri- cal fuses, and so on. Moreover, ships that are originally asbestos-free, sometimes still


contains asbestos on board. Due to repairs on a shipyard (and/or in later purchased spare parts). Unfortunately, asbestos still frequently occurs not only in ships, but also in buildings.
