Travel media giant Skift recently coined the term “State of Permanxiety,” the “near-constant state of anxiety that exists around the world. Travelers endure a barrage of worries about terrorism, security, neo- isolationism, racial tension, politics, technology and its adverse role, the widening economic gap, culture wars, climate change, and other geopolitical and local issues.”
Tis state of mind, Skift goes on to explain, is only heightened by the rapidity and permanence of opinion and news that is “the social media network,” so that travelers – and we – are constantly bombarded with “red-alert” headlines that can keep us in a constant state of anxiety; or eventually, numbness to it all.

Despite these stressors, US attraction guests are more optimistic about the US economy than they were in 2016. 48% believe that the economy will improve in the next six months, up nine and six points over 2017 and 2016, respectively. Zoo and Animal Attraction, Water Park, Dinner Teater and Cruise, and Aquarium guests are the most optimistic demographics, all with rates over 50% believing the economy will improve.
Family Entertainment Center’s guests being the least optimistic –
only a third foreseeing a silver lining
