YEAR OF THE NEW
For many attraction guests, 2017 marked the “year of the new.” Tis is the first year that we witnessed aggregate repeat attraction visitation drop, with 57% of respondents noting they had been to their most recent attraction before (down from 64% in 2015 and 2016). Botanical Gardens, FECs, Aquariums, and Historic Landmarks are the only attraction categories that have enjoyed two-year growth in repeat visitation, while Teme Parks, Large Format Screen Teaters, Zoos and Animal Attractions, Teaters, Museums, Sightseeing Tours, Science Centers, Historic Homes, and Art Galleries have all experienced two-year declines.
Te “looking for something new” trend is relatively stable from last year, with guests noting that they intend to return to the same attraction this year as last year at nearly the same rate as in the previous year of our study (3.86 in 2017 as opposed to 2016’s 3.89, on a five-point scale). Large Format Screen Teaters, Zoos and Animal Attractions, and Teme Parks top the list of return intention with scores above 4.23, while Sightseeing Tours are the only attraction type to score below three (2.91).
