Seaside Finolhu BAA ATOLL, MALDIVES
THIS TROPICAL ISLAND PARADISE OFFERS A BEAUTIFUL SPACE WHERE GUESTS CAN RELAX WITH THEIR FEET IN THE SAND AND ENJOY EXOTIC CULINARY JOURNEYS
Following a transformation inspired by the shapes and patterns of a kaleidoscope and the colours of the Maldives, five-star Seaside Finolhu Baa Atoll Maldives reopened in November 2020, as the first Maldivian member of the Design Hotels portfolio. The fully refreshed resort offers casual beach club vibes and exceptional entertainment in one of the Indian Ocean’s most stylish settings.
Architecture & design Its name translating as ‘sandbank’ in the Maldivian language, the naturally beautiful private island of Finolhu was acquired by Germany’s Seaside Collection in 2019 and is guided by a distinctively European-style hotel philosophy that embraces the types of relaxing beachside gatherings for expressive individuals and modern travellers. With its barefoot chic ambience on a vibrant tropical island playground, Finolhu puts a playful twist on luxury, which is ideal for couples, families, groups of friends and even solo travellers. The transformation was overseen by award-winning London-based design
60
studio Muza Lab. Founder Inge Moore created a kaleidoscope design concept for Finolhu, taking inspiration from the fragmentation of light on the blue-toned water and the many purple, pink and apricot colours of the sunset. Each of the 125 guest villas has been redesigned, embracing the theme that’s featured throughout the resort, characterised by a blend of colours and symmetrical patterns that complement the island’s natural beauty.
Gastronomy & entertainment Finolhu’s culinary experiences run across the resort’s four restaurants, where every table comes with a spectacular view. The culinary team brings an exquisite mix of artisanship, individuality and international flair with fresh produce and ingredients being a key focus behind the cuisine. Guests are taken on a gastronomic journey with modern Japanese and Asian cuisine at Kanusan; flavours of the Middle East and North Africa at the Arabian Grill; Italian, Asian, Maldivian and other international tastes at Beach Kitchen; and fresh
seafood platters with an ultimate toes-in-the-sand escapade at Crab Shack, located along the sandbank. Finolhu’s entertainment and energy is what sets
it apart from other resorts, with nightly displays of fire shows and acrobatic performances, as well as regular DJs sets. The Beach Bar is the heart of the resort, where laid-back beats and classic cocktails can be enjoyed throughout the day and late into the evening. Golf-lovers missing the fairway can still practice their swing at the new high-tech Golf Studio. There’s the chance to work on your teeing-off or play a full game on more than 50 courses from around the world — virtually, of course.
Beach bubble Spending the night under the stars in a state-of-the- art Beach Bubble on a secluded private beach in the Maldives is a truly magical bucket-list experience for the romantically adventurous. The Dream Eclipse Experience’s newly transformed bubble features three connected bubble rooms, with separate space for the bedroom, living room and bathroom. Located
along a sandbank, away from the main island of the resort, for that undeniable feeling of total seclusion, the new set-up includes an outdoor bathtub for a romantic al fresco soak while being serenaded by the gentle lapping of the waves. The bubble is booked as a sunset-to-sunrise
experience and includes a romantic dinner and breakfast on the beach, plus a personal ‘Bubble Butler’. Guests staying at Finolhu for at least three nights can book the one-night-only Dream Eclipse Experience from £750 per couple .
5° North Welcome to a new dining experience at 5° North, situated on a special platform exactly five degrees north of the Equator. Available for a minimum of two and a maximum of eight guests, the choice of carefully curated menus includes the finest steak, seafood and vegetarian delights, from Angus beef sirloin, lamb merguez sausages, marinated reef fish, grilled Maldivian lobster and jumbo prawns to halloumi cheese skewers and vegetables marinated in mild spices.
Coral regeneration The resort’s latest initiative ensures mindful guests leave only footprints on the white sands and heart-shaped reefs in the ocean. Guests are invited to plant bespoke heart-shaped frames in the surrounding waters at Finolhu Baa Atoll, to help increase the number and diversity of species living on the resort’s house reef. One of the main draws of this tropical island is the opportunity to experience true fifty shades of blue with snorkelling and diving excursions aplenty. But while coral reefs are a major tourist attraction, they are also incredibly vulnerable and so in a bid to safeguard the biodiversity of its abundant marine ecosystems, the resort has launched its Coral Reef Restoration Project, with a twist. Fragments of ‘opportunity coral’ — pieces of naturally broken coral — are attached to spiderweb frames shaped like hearts and placed on the edge of the resort’s house reef to create a nursery. The plantation will be regularly monitored and maintained to prevent the build-up of algae and remove any predators that could have an adverse effect on the coral.
