Recognise that all organisms respire and explain the role of energy for organisms.
Formulate a word equation for respiration.
Evaluate the role of respiration and photosynthesis in the flow of energy and cycling of matter through the Earth.
All organisms need energy to do work. Work takes many forms – making new cells, replacing damaged or worn-out cells, physical activity, thinking and even sleeping.
Organisms get their energy from food.
The release of energy from food is called respiration.
Water
Food (including glucose)
As we know, plants make their own food. Animals, including humans, get their food by eating plants or other animals.
Carbon dioxide
Organisms that must eat food because they cannot make their own are called consumers.
