Table 13 presents additional checks performed on subsamples of the Chinese cohort, using some of the available biographical data. This analysis was done to confirm whether the correlations were consistently weak for male, female, English-medium educated and random groups with the overall sample

The correlations are consistently low among the subsamples: about as low or lower than the measurement for the whole Chinese data set (rho .211) with only Random Sample 1 noticeably higher, even approaching the correlation strength of the mixed data set. In addition, an extraordinarily low correlation was found (not in table) between IRS and VST for the male Chinese speakers (.045) indicating that, for this group, there was almost no relationship between IELTS reading scores and VST results.
