The national curriculum advises that pupils who have reached the expected standard should not move on to new content but develop their understanding in greater depth.


This course will explore the meaning of greater depth in the context of maths, looking at questions and activities that can help to promote it in the classroom. This will include curriculum design ideas that challenge many established ideas of eff ective maths teaching which can lead to sustained mastery.


Learning outcomes ✓ Explore the four corners of greater depth in maths.


✓ Look at strategies to improve pupils’ outcomes in making mathematical connections, procedural fl uency, problem solving and mathematical reasoning.
