Early Years
Becoming a Problem Solver
Delivered by: Fran Watson Level:
Course number: 09 EYFS
Course overview This course will cover four key sessions:
• Supporting children’s problem solving: explore low threshold high ceiling tasks from NRICH and explore how they can be used with all learners to develop ways of working mathematically.
• Preparing for chance and planned opportunities: look at ways to maximise opportunities which present themselves spontaneously as well as those which can be prepared for.
• Encouraging mathematical thinking and reasoning: use the characteristics of learning as a lens through which to experience some rich tasks.
• Accentuating the positive and eliminating the negative: enthusing learners and practitioners alike is key. The day will fi nish with two games, one that sets an intriguing puzzle, and the other that promises all the answers!
Learning outcomes
✓ Understand how to develop mathematical thinking through both child-led and adult-led activities.
✓ Explore games that provide an ideal setting to nurture learners’ logical thinking.
✓ Discuss best practice and share ways of overcoming barriers to problem solving.
