Ready for gene therapy challenges in the NHS


Jonathan Morton, engineering director of BES, the specialist in design and construction of sophisticated healthcare, pharmaceutical and biopharma environments, discusses the company’s current pharmacy and aseptic suite project at Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield.

Emerging cell gene therapy treatments mean there is a need for specialist facilities to be constructed within hospital pharmacies to enable the use of viral vectors in targeting advanced medicines to the affected part of the body. Weston Park Hospital, part of the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, is in the process of realising a two-phase refurbishment project to create a new Advanced Therapy Medicinal Product (ATMP) and Clinical Trials (CT) aseptic suite, along with a refurbished pharmacy Chemotherapy Aseptic Dispensing Unit. An ATMP classification includes


regenerative medicine, personalised treatments and the development of

nanomedicines using either a gene therapy medicinal product, a somatic cell therapy medicinal product, or a tissue engineered product. The exacting science of these


preparations requires equally sophisticated storage, reconstitution and handling procedures, specific to each product. Their potentially hazardous nature also demands complex toxicity management to prevent contamination of the medical treatment, or avoid any risk of particle release outside of the controlled area. Designed, engineered and constructed


by BES, the pharmacy and aseptic suite project aims to futureproof the hospital’s drug preparation capabilities on site.

Jonathan Morton is engineering director of BES. With a BEng in building services from UCLan more than 30 years in designing sophisticated environments for the pharmaceutical and life sciences sectors, Jonathan has been a member of the BES


team for over 16 years. He has been engineering director since 2017. Working with BES’ in-house multidisciplinary team, he oversees all aspects of programme, design, technical and commercial considerations, ensuring the project outcome benefits from exceptional, design, value, quality and safety for their projects.


His expertise includes design, management, SHE, validation and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice).

Project scope We were appointed as both principal designer and principal contractor for the project, with responsibility for maintaining business as usual within the fully- operational hospital. All construction works have to be delivered in the live healthcare environment, considering the needs of clinicians, service users and patients. The avoidance of any interruptions is a critical success factor for the project. The project is being developed in two


phases. Redundant office space on the sixth floor has been refurbished to create a new, high-specification chemotherapy aseptic dispensing facility in phase one, allowing the hospital’s pharmacy team to move across to the completed accommodation. The former pharmacy is now being refurbished as the new aseptic suite with sophisticated CT and ATMP preparation facilities.


Design development Due to the project’s specialist nature, the hospital needed a partner that was proven across the design and construction requirements. Working with our multidisciplinary team has meant the hospital team could collaborate with a single company, ensuring every aspect of the project has been joined up, with
