Green roofs On most of the roofs of the inpatients units and care areas, we propose to create green terraces with low-maintenance plant material and without drip irrigation. As mentioned above, this solution of green roofs is a great ally to contribute to thermal insulation, as well as to avoid the heat island effect generated by the buildings. Other sectors present stones with thermal absorption capacity, generating a similar effect.


Natural lighting All the centre’s premises have natural lighting, most directly through the perimeter of the building or through the interior expansion and contemplative courtyards. Work was carried out to improve the natural lighting in large premises such as gyms, therapeutic pool and access hall. In the former, an indirect lighting


surface with sawtooth roof type openings was used and in the latter, zenithal lighting through a perimeter light slit. The entrance areas to the hospital were illuminated indirectly through a window on the side of the raised roof.


Semi-covered expansions of the inpatient units Towards the perimeter of the therapeutic garden, each IU has semi-covered expansions. In order to make them pleasant spaces on hot summer days, they are naturally ventilated through an opening generated by a difference in height.


Architecture as therapy Therapeutic garden We worked the exterior space as a therapeutic garden. All the IUs are directly linked to it. On the outside, the union is through a path divided by a green space

and shares a recreational path with the walking track. The latter is organised into sectors of different flooring (stone, sand, tiles, smoothing, etc.) and levels (stairs and ramps) where the patient exercises while walking on different surfaces and heights. To coincide with the expansion of the


IUs, we also propose pergolas with rest areas that allow the patient to receive


visitors, if the weather permits, to stop for a walk or go directly from their IU to an outside space with a degree of privacy. There are also expansions for the IUs that are given to the expansion yards, with direct visual control from the nursing station.


Interior corridor The proposal is to work on this interior corridor with an idea similar to the exterior, in the sense that a lateral part is a walking track so that the patient can exercise without having to leave the building, for example on cold or rainy days. The walking track includes benches for rest in tandem with the contemplative patios. Differentiation of floor colour and the inclusion of handrails help to accomplish this purpose.

Colour orientation Each IU has a storage space/machine room that formally advances over the main circulation. Each of these spaces have a different colour so that it quickly orients the patient and family member to the unit where they need to go. These colours also follow in the respective patios.
