procedures so much easier for the clinical team,” explains Bender UK national clinical sales consultant Steve Coleman. “They have all the relevant patient information, data, scans and other images literally at their fingertips. It also enables the clinical teams to share their work with students, and consult with other professionals in real time.”

care to local people with end-of-life conditions, and every year it supports more than 4,500 patients and their families, with free quality-of-life care, across seven London boroughs. “Our new wing represents the huge

efforts of our staff, our surgeons and our design team to create an environment that will provide the highest standards of care for our patients,” says Caroline Fox, St John & St Elizabeth Hospital’s chief executive officer. “They have worked against all odds, particularly having to navigate COVID restrictions, to produce a beautiful addition to this historic hospital, and one which will go on to serve the community of St John’s Wood for many years to come,” she adds. Merivaara is Bender UK’s key partner in the delivery of integrated theatres supplying high performance LED lighting systems and other equipment alongside its OpenOR integrated theatre system. OpenOR delivers patient information including scans and X-rays, allows recording or live sharing of images from the theatre within the hospital or across the internet, and enables real-time communication with other medical staff and students.

All six of the new theatres are fitted with Merivaara Q-Flow LED operating lights with wireless 4K HD cameras. They were selected due to the best-in-class colour rendering, with unique dynamic obstacle compensation to deliver optimum illumination to the surgical site and reduce shading. Four of the theatres are equipped with laminar flow clean air systems by Medical Air Technologies. The ring-within-a-ring design of the Merivaara lights ensures uninterrupted clean air flow from the laminar canopy – a particularly important requirement for orthopaedic surgery to help minimise the risk of infection. The Q- Flow lights have their own UPS battery back-up system in a dedicated plant

room, ensuring they continue to operate in the event of a power failure. Each theatre has three DICOM

compliant 4K monitors ceiling-mounted on articulating arms – 2 x 31-inch and 1 x 27-inch, a wall-mounted 55-inch 4K monitor, and wall-mounted CP924 glass touchscreen theatre control panel and Open OR touchscreen panel. Two ceiling- mounted service pendants deliver medical gases, critical power and data. The AV systems link to a video

conference room and co-ordinator suite for remote viewing and consultation on surgical procedures with live two-way audio, and images can also be live streamed via the internet and archived with patient notes. “Total seamless integration of the

various elements within the operating theatre is a hugely important development for healthcare facilities that makes set-up and completion of

Medical IT power and UPS resilience Bender UK has a unique knowledge and experience of medical IT/isolated power supply systems having helped to develop UK standards for the technology, which underpins the resilience of so many of the county’s operating theatres and critical care facilities. The medical IT system in the new wing at St John and St Elizabeth Hospital is a state-of-the-art installation designed to operate alongside UPS batteries to ensure a no-fail power system for critical areas.

“Bender UK has been extremely pro-

active in helping to raise the standard of electrical protection and resilience at the hospital. Our critical Group 2 areas benefit from medical IT systems which prevent automatic shutdown for first faults while ensuring the protection of personnel and equipment,” says St John and St Elizabeth Hospital director of projects Steve Kimp. “In conjunction with Bender ATICS

auto-changeover device technology installed within each IPS panel, the modular UPS installation provides a cost-effective and future-proof back-up solution.” The ATICS automatic transfer

switching device from Bender UK is the only changeover solution purpose- designed for medical applications with patient safety at the very core of its conception and development. Central to
